History of Sawyers Jewelry
The doors of Sawyers Jewelry officially opened in 1946 when my father Jack C. Sawyer purchased a small jewelry store at 628 Main Street in downtown Laconia, NH.

My family's involvement in the jewelry business dates back to 1908 when Jack's father, Alexander Sawyer, who shortly after arriving in America became known as one of Boston's finest watchmakers. Jack apprenticed with his father and became an efficient watchmaker before journeying north to Laconia.

At the beginning, Jack worked retail during the days and supported his family by repairing watches at night. In his spare time he took courses with the Gemological Institute of America and by 1951 had become one of New Hampshire's first Certified Gemologists of the American Gem Society.

In spite of the fact that Laconia had numerous jewelry stores, the business outgrew its space, and in the fall of 1952 Jack built a "state of the art" store across the street at 633 Main, more than doubling the size of his store.

Having completed a degree in business administration, a master's degree in education, and a tour of duty as an Army Community Services Officer, I returned to Main Street, Downtown Laconia in the fall of 1972. After the required GIA courses, I became a Registered Jeweler of the American Gem Society. In 1979, I took over the "helm" to continue the Sawyers' tradition.

I began by assembling my staff. I knew that the key to success would be a competent, knowledgeable, friendly and helpful staff to present the best jewelry and gifts. For over 50 years Sawyers has offered the services of a Certified Gemologist of the American Gem Society to guide us in the selection of our jewelry, and to perform appraisals. Our current gemologist is Susan M. Quadrozzi, R.J., C.G., AGS.

With my loyal staff, some of whom have been with me from the beginning, and almost all of whom have over 15 years experience in the industry (most of it with Sawyers), we continue to grow and serve our customers, providing the best service and fine jewelry.

The opportunity presented itself for us to relocate to the entrance of downtown Laconia. In the fall of 1979 we moved into our new store at 520 Main Street, downtown Laconia.

In 1984, when the large mill in downtown Meredith was being transformed into the picturesque Mill Falls Marketplace, Sawyers was invited to be "the" jeweler. We renovated the dirt floor tool room into a state of the art jewelry store which looks as current today as it did then.

In 2009, after 25 wonderful years in Meredith, we decided to merge our Meredith Store into Laconia. This means our staff and services can be conveniently found in one easy to find location. Click here for directions to the Laconia Store.

The Sawyers team of dedicated professionals is prepared to serve you. We are proud of our commitment to great service and quality jewelry.
