A pulsed YAG source puts a small, controlled amount of energy into the joint. The heat-affected zone stays narrow, which is what allows re-tipping a prong with the stone still set, or closing a seam beside an enamel or a soldered finding without flooding the whole piece with heat.

Where it fits in a workshop
